Lab Results Overview

Jesse’s blood test results recently revealed significant change. His white blood cell count has increased to over 280,000; platelets are below 10,000; leukemia blasts have increased to 72%.

He is aware of the results but continues to want to ‘Celebrate Life’ as he reminded me just this morning. His desire to eat and watch movies is incredible. We have been watching the Food Network channel every night. His favorite show is ‘Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives’. So, we have been researching the triple D hot spots in Michigan that the host Guy Fieri has visited…maybe we will adventure out and eat at some of those restaurants.

Lab Result Ranges:

White blood cell count (WBC). The number of white blood cells in a volume of blood. Normal range varies slightly between laboratories but is generally between 4,300 and 10,800 cells per cubic millimeter (cmm).

Platelet count. Platelets are not complete cells, but actually fragments of cytoplasm from a cell found in the bone marrow called a megakaryocyte. Platelets play a vital role in blood clotting. Normal range varies slightly between laboratories but is in the range of 150,000 – 400,000 cmm.

Thrombocytopenia Overview

Thrombocyte is the medical term for platelet. Thrombocytopenia means a lower platelet count in the blood compared to the normal range. Thrombocytosis refers to a greater number of platelets compared to the normal range.

Platelets are important elements in the blood that are important for blood coagulation (clotting and prevention of bleeding). The normal platelet count ranges between 150,000 and 450,000 per microliter (one-millionth of a liter). Although the number of platelets is decreased, their function may remain intact in most cases of thrombocytopenia.

In severe thrombocytopenia (platelet counts of less than 10,000 to 20,000), excess bleeding can occur if the person is cut or injured. Spontaneous bleeding can also happen when platelet numbers are severely diminished.
