Not Quitting ~ Just Choosing a Different Path

Day 24 post chemo induction of last chemo regimen…

Jesse continues to feel weak, complain of terrible body muscle pains and he still cannot keep much real food down.  Again his platelets were so low that he received another transfusion.  The white blood cell count has not recovered either which can cause lack of energy, immune deficiency and an upset stomach.

Today, Jesse declared he is not a quitter but is choosing a different path.  He refused the intrathecal Methotrexate & AraC spinal injection….actually, refused anymore.  He said he tried, tried and tried but the chemo has not helped him, it has wiped him out and caused irreversible damage.  Several times he has gone into remission but never long enough to start the BMT process.   Jesse is choosing not to die from chemo side effects and would rather go home to enjoy the rest of his time, food, family and friends.

Medically, now it’s just a matter of time.  How long people ask…possibly 4 weeks to 6 months, just depending on how well his body defends infections and produces good blood cells after it recovers from the last chemo blast.  Or unless, the Lord blesses us with a healing miracle.

Lord, I am praying for that miracle and also the softening of Jesse’s heart.  I know he is angry Lord, so please open his eyes to see.  I trust in You. Amen. ~Ingrid

I would love to tell you my story, but not sure if you really want to or even have the strength to read it right now. I will say that PRAYER WORKS!! Please let me know if you ever want to hear my story, but for now, know that I am praying for Jesse and all of you to have strength and a Miracle to get you through this horrible time. Hello Jesse.

I am just a complete stranger who has felt the need to keep up with your story. I am praying for you and your family to get through these hard times. I can’t even begin to imagine the pain and hurt you are going through, physically and emotionally. I just pray that God is able to do the things that medicine cannot. I am praying that God gives you the strength to do whatever it takes to make you healthy again. Praying for you from Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Jesse, your strength and story is my daily bread. It teaches me every moment to love more, to give more and to be more. You are an inspiration far superior then I have ever known and I want to thank you for that. Thank you for fighting. Thank you for sharing. Thank you for being you and never giving up. We are praying for a healing and ask God that a miracle comes your way. I feel so blessed to have met such an amazing and may I say handsome young man. Be great my friend! Praying for the richness of His grace to fill your hearts and home this Thanksgiving…praying for healing waves of joy and laughter in the Hourigan household…and especially for Jesse. Eat, drink & be merry, with the understanding that NONE of us knows how long we have on this earth. Our times are in His hands. As always, you all are in my heart and prayers. Peace & Joy.
After you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. (1 Peter 5:10 ESV)

For some reason I cannot put in a “post”. Jesse, thanks for texting me the other night. Although I did not know what to say I hope you could feel my love. I am so proud of the man you have grown to be!!! I will never forget you and Savannah coming to my front door, I was holding a 2 day old baby- to see if we had kids! You had the biggest smile when I opened the door and Savannah was so shy! ☺
I love you all so much. You, Scott, Ingrid and Savannah! You all have such strength and have been through something most cannot imagine! We love you so much! I hope you will be home soon to enjoy your family without the sterility of a hospital room!

  30. May the good Lord be with you during your pain. I know and respect a decision not to do anymore chemo. I have heard and seen first hand the damage caused by this. I will say a prayer for healing and for the family. Cancer is a serious disease and it has taken two of my family members away. I am inspired by this story and all the people that care enough to say something. God Bless you young man. Fight the good fight and know you are loved and you have left a mark on many peoples lives. A good mark . . one that will be there forever. I sincerely hope your pain is minimal and your comfortable.

Hi Jesse! Cancer is a threat to my family as well. My cousin is stage IV colorectal and is only 43 years old. He lives in Mt. Clemens, MI. He is with his friends in home hospice. This stuff makes me very angry too. I’ve lost my aunt, mother, now my cousin and watch your blog and you’re angry and frustrated and who could blame you! I have lupus which isn’t cancer but we are treated with chemo drugs too, a much lower dose than you, but the methotrexate still makes me sick and barfing and just overall ticked off at the world! I pray/wish you no pain, good recovery of your counts, and a normal life that you deserve! You do inspire me to be a better person! You keep on keepin on my friend and fight the fight and prove that cancer wrong!

Jesse I remember a little over a year ago when we had our bike trip in Michigan with your grandpa Gary and met you. We all went out to lunch together and enjoyed each others company. After we left you had made an impression on all of us because we all had commented on what a great kid you were. You were very polite, caring, mature person and it showed us all that day. We have been following your long journey and have been inspired with all your courage and strength. There are miracles out there and I hope the next one goes comes your way. I have witnessed a true miracle with a friend of mine that had a tumor in her brain that was cancer. She has been in remission for at least 10 years no. You deserve the next miracle.
