Friday, Oct 12th ~ Blood Draw: Leukemia has Spread
Upon discharge from the ER admission, we were given bad news regarding Jesse’s blood test results. It seems the leukemia in his bone marrow has now spread into his blood stream at a 14% level. This means the Ponatinib is no longer working. 😦
Consequently, we will return to the hospital tomorrow for another blood test to determine how fast the leukemia is reproducing. If the level has not greatly increased, Jesse will be able to return home for the weekend to continue the antibiotic orally. If it has increased, he will more than likely be readmitted to get IV antibiotics. Chemotherapy cannot not be started until the infection is gone.
When Jesse is infection free, the Ponatinib will be stopped and a new combination of IV chemotherapy will be given. Jesse will be in the hospital for at least 1-2 weeks while he is monitored for potential side effects.
