Hump Day

There have been a change of plans… Jesse will not be going home at the end of March, obviously.  After much thought and consultation it was decided that a couple more weeks of intense therapy would benefit Jesse.  The goal is to release him but ultimately re-admit him once he is physically & mentally strong enough to endure the bone marrow transplant (BMT).

So, with this goal, it seems we are rarely in Jesse’s hospital room.  His days start early with OT teaching basic morning functins.  Then it’s off to PT where they are working on strengthening muscles, balance & walking.  After that Jesse rolls into Speech where they continue to work on pronunciation. Quite often he has additional doctor visits prior to lunch.  Before we know it, lunch time has passed and we tackle the same regimen plus add class time to his afternoons.  A teacher has been assigned to Jesse providing assistance with his reading and writing skills.  Due to the fine motor skill damage, Jesse will need to learn to write again.  Reading is not a problem but she thought working on comprehension would be a good idea too.

Needless to say, Jesse has to dig deep to continue with this schedule. Today, hump day, was a bit of a stumbling block.  At lunch he just crashed.  Too tired to eat, talk or roll to his next appointment.  He always says, “All we do is go, go, go…And I am trying so dang hard!”.  Sometimes I wonder how he does it.  When I ask, he says, “If these little kids can do it so can I, plus I want to be strong for them when they see me.”  Consequently, Jesse got a free pass for the rest of the day and is catching up on his sleep.

I continue to watch Jesse be a light in this hospital.  He remembers everyone’s name (from the cleaning lady, security guards to the hospital staff) and continually uses those southern manners and charm.  When we pray, he always remembers the little ones…Devon, Leilah, Gracie, Julia, MooMoo & Zander.  It’s amazing to see such blessings during these very hard times.

Romans 8:28  We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

Yesterday, Jesse told me his favorite Bible verse is:

Philippians 4:13  For I can do anything through Christ who strengthens me.

Tell him “good job!” for us. You are all still in my prayers. Call if you ever need to just “unload”. I’m still a great listener!
